10 Hotel Workers Defend Health Care About 650 workers at the Westin St. Francis Hotel (managed by Starwood Hotels and Resorts), one of San Francisco's oldest and most luxurious, walked out on strike on November 18, 2009. This was the third of what promised to be many strikes hitting San Francisco's Class A hotels. The contract with the workers' union, UNITE HERE Local 2, expired on August 14. Since then, Local 2 has been trying to bargain a new agreement in the middle of an economic depression. Hotel operators demanded such high increases in health care premiums that most workers would not have been able to keep their medical insurance. |
