Janine Woerner hands out materials to students in her third-grade class at Pleasant Valley Elementary School in Novato. This is her first year teaching, and she was hired in a wave of new teachers in California classrooms as a result of class size reductions in grades K-3. Although class sizes were reduced, many classes are being held in small rooms formerly used for other purposes, as is the case with this class.
