04 Waiting for the children
Immigrant mothers wait with their children outside the gate at Park Avenue Elementary School in Cudahy, in southeast Los Angeles. The school, in one of the poorest, most heavily immigrant communities in the country, was built on top of an old industrial site. When toxic waste began bubbling up through the pavement of the playground, the school was closed for a year while a cap was placed over the material beneath the school.
