05 Strikers at the gate
Carmen, near Davao City, Mindanao
Farm workers on strike against the U.S.-based Dole Corporation stand on the bridge at the entrance the Diamond Farms banana plantation. Armed guards hired by Dole, along with Philippine army units, expelled the workers from the plantation, although they became owners of the land under the agrarian reform law in 1996. At the gate, a sign announces that the plantation is private property, and forbids the workers from entering.
