Day of the Dead
On the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), Oaxacans build altars to the dead, and dress as skeletons in costumes. Groups of students, or different communities, make offerings of sand and flowers in the city cemetery. A large percentage of the residents of Oaxaca have left to work in the United States, where the same celebrations take place in Mexican barrios.
