12 Work raffle
A day laborer draws a name from a jar at the North Hollywood day labor site administered by the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles. A contractor has stopped at the site looking for laborers. The workers at the site use this raffle system to assure that the work is distributed without favoritism among those waiting for work. The site is an alternative to the shape-up, where workers wait on a corner for a contractor to come by and offer them work.
